Today Abingdon Prep hosted their 5th annual Under 13 Rugby Sevens Tournament. There were several schools in attendance including; Pitsford School, Cothill House, Christ Church CS, Beachborough and both an Abingdon Prep and Abingdon School A and B VII. Abingdon School were the current holders of the trophy and would offer the stiffest opposition in their group matches, Abingdon Prep made light work of their opposition by winning against CCCS (38 – 12), Beachborough (35 – 0) and Abingdon School B (59 – 0).

The semi-final versus Cothill proved to be a sterner test for our boys. But our superior speed, strength and defensive organisation paid off with a five tries to two victory against our local rivals.

In the final we met an Abingdon A VII which had scored handsome victories against all their opponents and looked very sharp indeed. Our game plan was to pressurise them with superior ‘line-speed’ and to closely manage their two ‘flying’ wingers. Abingdon Prep got off to a magnificent start, scoring three unanswered tries in the opening five minutes of the game. Abingdon School A then managed to score a try just before the interval. A spirited second half defensive display from the whole squad limited Abingdon School A to a single score which meant that Abingdon Prep A won by 21 – 14. There were some outstanding individual moments throughout the tournament but their steely determination and team ethic won them through in the end. Huge congratulations to the whole squad.

The Under 13 Bs also acquitted themselves well despite a very tough pool. Their final match, against Pitsford School, Northamptonshire, was particularly impressive where they narrowly lost 14 – 22 . However the experience gained throughout the day will prove valuable.
