Abingdon businesses support Fitzharrys’ Fitz24 racing team

Abingdon automotive components companies, Zircotec and GKN Automotive, and Abingdon School’s Abingdon Science Partnership, supported Fitzharrys School’s Fitz24 racing team in the Greenpower electric go-kart challenge at the beginning of July.

The Fitz24 team have been working on their electrically powered go-kart for the past year, supported by engineers from GKN Automotive’s STEM outreach programme. The basic go-kart kit was purchased by GKN and then assembled by the Year 10 student team under guidance from GKN’s STEM Ambassadors. The students designed and manufactured the bodywork in Fitzharrys School’s DT workshops led by Lawrence McCook, DT teacher at the school.

They enjoyed their first race event at the Greenpower F24 heats in early July at Ford’s Dunton test track in Basildon, Essex where they were joined by a team of Year 6 pupils from Caldecott Primary School who were racing their own electric go-kart in the Greenpower Goblin event.

The team has also been selected as one of the Tesco Community Grant projects which will be voted on by customers in Abingdon stores during July, August and September and hope this grant will help fund the safety gear and team clothing they will need to take part in national Greenpower competitions.
