Friday brought a packed day of activities starting with a morning walking tour of the city centre. Mid morning we travelled to the European Southern Observatory visitor centre and the students completed a space themed quiz while exploring the exhibits. The group was then split into three subgroups and headed off to different departments of the Technical University of Munich for workshops. The first group visited the Maths department and spent the time working on problems and looking at bridge construction. The second group went to the Max Planck institute for astrophysics and learned about space. The third group attended the Max Planck institute for quantum optics, visiting a real research lab and then undertaking their own laser based experiments. Following the workshops we headed back to the ESO for a planetarium show late afternoon. Following dinner we headed to the Munich Public Observatory, had a talk from a current researcher and enjoyed touring the telescopes on the roof.

Saturday morning brought a visit to the largest science museum in the world; the Deutsche Museum. The group toured the exhibits first and then undertook a workshop on robotics. We then headed across the city and went to the BMW museum and then up the Olympic Tower.

The whole experience was very enjoyable and a particular thank you goes to the staff who accompanied the trip.
