On a glorious afternoon on Waste Court, the 1st XI took on St John’s Leatherhead in the ISFA Trophy Semi Final, cheered on by a bumper crowd eager to support the team. Abingdon started well, dominating possession and trying to create some shooting opportunities. St John’s Leatherhead showed good moments on the counter attack and created some half chances throughout with their number 7 causing a few problems for our defence. As the first half progressed, Abingdon grew into the game and started to push forward. With half time looming, the ball was passed out wide to Finnbar who delivered a great ball across the box for Sam to head into the corner with big celebrations from the crowd watching.
The second half mirrored much of the first, with Abingdon controlling possession while St John’s Leatherhead remained a constant threat on the counterattack. As the game continued, St John’s Leatherhead started to push forward, leaving a few gaps at the back. Liam chased down a pass and ran through the defence, past the keeper and slotted home to make it 2-0. Abingdon will play in the National Trophy Final at Arbour Park (Slough Town FC) on Thursday 27 March at 15:30.
