Abingdon School’s musicians delivered an impeccable evening of solo and chamber music at the iconic Holywell Music Room in Oxford. Every single performance was top-notch, demonstrating incredible technical skill and musicality across the board.

As noted in the programme note, Director of Music Mr Stafford emphasised that the event aimed to provide a snapshot of the immense breadth evident in both the genre of classical music and the array of musical talent across the student body.

This spirit was clear throughout the ambitious and varied repertoire, opening with Mozart’s famous “Gran Partita” played by 11 student chamber musicians. This was followed by 16 solo items, with instruments ranging from bassoon to marimba, violin to piano, and voice to clarinet. Many of the pieces were far beyond Grade 8 level, impressing the audience with not only their technical skills, but also the expressiveness of their musicianship.

Before the concert, Mr Stafford shared a sentiment with the students that perfectly captured the ethos of the night. He reminded them that this opportunity was about much more than just performing in a historic building; it was a moment to recognise that they are all incredible musicians in their own right, to fully embrace their talent, and, most importantly, to enjoy the experience. Judging by the remarkable performances that followed, the students took this beautifully to heart.

We look forward to returning in 2027!
