13 March 2018

This was another top week for Abingdon Hockey Club, with the 1st team entering the St George's College 6s, the Lower School having a block fixture vs Dragon and a full block fixture vs Wellington.

The Lower School started the week off in fine fashion with a great block fixture vs the Dragon. In some close fought 11-a-side matches the U13As created some good chances against a very fine Dragon side. Unfortunately, they didn't quite convert them allowing the Dragon to win 2-0. Also at home were the U13Bs and U12Bs who both played some wonderful hockey, with forward momentum and quick slick passing, they both had convincing wins. The U12As who have had a fine season, put in a great display and were unlucky to come out on the wrong end of the result.

The 1st VIII, were privileged to be invited to the 40th celebration of the St George's 6s, which is a wonderful event, where all the top hockey schools in the country attend. With a great start Abingdon won three and drew one of their first 4 matches. This meant that they had to beat Kingston Grammar School to go though to the semi-final of the main competition. With a resilient 1st half display Abingdon had their chances to come level with Kingston, however with tired legs, Kingston went on to win the tightly fought game. This meant Abingdon went straight into the semi-final of the plate, losing to a strong Charterhouse side. This placed Abingdon in the top 10 out of the 36 schools that attended the event.

Saturday saw a brilliant fixture vs Wellington. The U15As and 1st XI continue their pursuit of top spot in the ISHL league, with two convincing 5-0 wins. The 2nd XI produced a fantastic display, winning 4-1, with some wonderful flowing attacking hockey. The U16s (riddled by illness), put in a courageous display, defending like trojans they managed to keep the score to a 1-0 loss. A big mention to them for being able to adapt with so many people away at the last moment. The U13As played up and won 6-0 against Wellington D team, however the A,B and C team were on the wrong end of some close encounters. Overall a top weekend for the Hockey Club, we look forward to the U13 regionals at the end of this week, a block fixture vs Radley on Wednesday and Thursday and our last ISHL match against Bradfield on Saturday.
