In hockey, the 1st team had a busy and successful week. On Wednesday they took on Kimbolton in the 3rd round of the National Plate at Tilsley Park. Despite going behind early, the team settled and against spirited resistance, they came away with what was ultimately a comfortable 5-2 win.
The team then travelled the next day to Chelmsford, to play New Hall in round 4. With a two and a half hour journey, the team was nonetheless determined to start faster than they had the day before and so it proved with Luke scoring two excellent goals early on. Oli and Sam added further goals later in the half to see the team go in 4-0 up at the break. Despite an injury to midfielder James, the team continued to defend well and attack with purpose with goals to Josh (2) and another to Oli, before a New Hall consolation at the final whistle saw the final score 7-1 to Abingdon and a Quarter Final clash confirmed against Felsted on Tuesday at Tilsley Park.
The team’s third match in four days saw them travel the short distance to Radley on Saturday, to take on the local rivals. In another solid performance, the team did very well to negotiate a slow and predictably noisy start to gain control of the match midway through the first half. An excellent goal from Luke gave Abingdon the ascendancy on the score sheet and the team began to dominate possession as they went in at half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead. That dominance continued in the second half, with Reuben adding the important second goal midway through the half, before Matteo added two goals in quick succession to give Abingdon a well deserved and controlled 4-0 win.
