The Football Club’s first block fixture of the season saw them take on Haileybury. Despite the long journey away, the Middle School sides had great success. Taking the field for the first time in Abingdon colours, the U14 As secured a 4-3 win thanks to goals from Felix Kind, Harvey Vinton and Max Struthers, whilst the U14 Bs also scored 4 in their victory. The U14 Cs under the guidance of Mr Evans secured a pleasing win, whilst the U14 D team, the first in the Football Club’s history, won 5-1.
Also over at Haileybury, Will Wallis and Theo Mara were on target as the U15 As won 2-0, whilst the U15 Bs finished in a 1-1 draw. The U15 Cs started the season positively, and the U15 Ds also started with a strong performance, Oscar Bunting, Ross Tselos and Nicholas Owen just three of the players on target that afternoon.
Back on the Abingdon School site the U16 As graced the newly developed Waste Court Field, and despite a brace from James Daly and a goal from Oliver Deans suffered a 4-3 defeat, whilst a goal from Rowan Prince and a double from Jack Heath were only enough to get the U16 Bs a 3-3 draw. The U16 Cs won 4-1.
Moving to the seniors and the 5th XI found themselves suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat, whilst the 4th XI had a terrific encounter. Both teams playing some very good football in their 1-1 draw. A Sam Christie goal wasn’t enough for the 3rd XI as they came off second best in a 3-1 defeat, and a slow start from the 2nd XI against a physical Haileybury XI saw them concede early; 0-3 the final score.
Over at Tilsley Park, despite a slow start the Abingdon 1st XI took an early lead, Hector Chambers finishing smartly having pressed high and won the ball early. Just before half time, the ball fell to a Haileybury player to finish from 6 yards out during a penalty box scramble; the game was in the balance at 1-1. A goalless second half saw the match finish this way with the Abingdon side leaving a little deflated after a promising second half display.
We now look forward to week two of the football season as we field 20 sides against Berkhamsted and Caldicott next weekend.
