Today we had the pleasure of hosting the fabulous young award-winning Fitzroy String Quartet. This was the ensemble’s second visit to the school, having come last year to do some chamber music coaching with our chamber ensembles.
Since then, the quartet has won a Beethoven competition in Poland and toured South Africa to great critical acclaim. They are currently preparing for the Overseas League Competition.
In the afternoon the members of the quartet coached some twelve of the school’s chamber groups – quartets, quintets and cello and clarinet ensembles, before giving a professional quartet concert of music by Haydn, Bartok and Beethoven in the Amey Theatre.
Pictured above are the young year 7 and 8 pupils of Junior Strings who were coached this afternoon by Stefano Mengoli and Laura Sabas, the quartet’s first and second violins. The concentration and consequent progress made by the boys during this session was quite phenomenal.
