On Thursday afternoon, the ESSA South East Oxfordshire qualifiers took place here at the Abingdon pool. There was an array of teams who came to compete: Abingdon, Radley, St Birinus, Stowe, Sibford, St Helen and St Katharine, Didcot Girls, Oxford High, Headington and St John’s. Impressive swimming was on display, including some brilliant performances from the Abingdon teams – see the results below.

Teams were swimming relay races with a 4×50 medley relay and a 4×50 freestyle relay.

  • Abingdon Juniors – 2nd in the Individual Medley in 2:49.24 and 1st in the Freestyle in 2:39.28 (helped by an unfortunate false start by St John’s)
  • Abingdon Intermediate A – 1st in the Individual Medley in 2:07.77 and 1st in the Freestyle in 1:52.39
  • Abingdon Intermediate B – 4th in the Individual Medley in 2:25.49 and 4th in the Freestyle in 2:09.69
  • Abingdon Senior A – 1st in the Individual Medley in 1:56.45 and 1st in the Freestyle in 1:44.52
  • Abingdon Senior B – 4th in the Individual Medley in 2:14.16 and 5th in the Freestyle in 2:02.13

Special congratulations to the following for exceptional performances:

  • Ethan Richards-Knight for breaking the U14 school record for 50M Freestyle with a time of 26.27 in the opening leg when the old record was 27.72 set in 2010!
  • The Abingdon Senior A for being very close to beating the old 4x50M Freestyle record of 1:42.10
  • Alex Cooper Marcos’s opening leg of the Freestyle relay was just over 25 seconds narrowly missing out on the school record of 24.87

It was great to see so many new swimmers taking part and lovely to see some familiar old faces from Mr Mason’s coaching days at AVSC.
