Newquay Tretherras School set the scene for the 40th edition of the English Schools Cup Final with a fantastic course, made all the more challenging by biting winds and changeable weather throughout the day.

During arguably the worst conditions, the intermediate team battled against the driving wind and hail, testing the resolve and resilience of every competitor that had made the long journey down to the South West. The team consisting of fourth years Oliver Sherratt, Oliver Veal and Charlie Adams, and third years Hugh Clarke, Ralph Allen and Sam Wood raced superbly to finish in 13th place overall. A tremendous effort considering three of this team will have the opportunity to compete in the same age group next year.

The last and most anticipated race of the day, the Senior boys, did not disappoint and it was fiercely contested from the gun, with the Abingdon squad grouping well towards the front of the pack. As the boggy ground and energy sapping hills started to take their toll a group of four managed to breakaway which included Club Captain, Rowan Miell-Ingram. With half a mile to go Sam Hodgson of Reading Blue Coat, made a decisive move on the last testing hill, opening a gap of approximately 20m. Rowan tried valiantly to close the gap but would have to settle for the silver medal on this occasion. A tremendous effort! The race was now on for the fastest team across the line. It was a close affair with Will d’Arcy and Johnny James both placing within the top 20, but the Judd proved too strong on the day, beating Abingdon into an extremely impressive second place.
