Two crews of fourth year boys recently spent time yachting in the Solent for their Bronze DofE Expedition. They sailed a route from Gosport – Cowes – Lymington – Southampton – Gosport. The first part of the trip was warm and sunny but then challenging conditions were encountered towards the end with strong winds meaning that both crews then sailed only under the jib downwind to return to Gosport. Various yachting skills were developed including helming the boat and trimming the sails on all points of sail, how to plan and plot positions as well as performing man overboard drills and close quarters boat handing.
