A determined group of Fourth Year students took to the River Medway in Kent for their Bronze DofE Canoeing Assessment. Paddling the route from Tonbridge to Maidstone, with an overnight camp at Yalding, the students faced a stark contrast to previous years’ heatwaves. Blustery winds and unpredictable June showers tested their stamina and boat control, demanding high levels of teamwork to navigate the river and set up camp.
Despite the unseasonal chill, morale remained exceptionally high, especially when tackling the exhilarating canoe shoots along the route. Even an unexpected—but safely managed—capsize couldn’t dampen their spirits, allowing the students to put their rescue training into perfect practice. Through resilient paddling and excellent campcraft, the group passed their assessment with flying colours.
