The first training weekend for the Recruit Cadre gave our new recruits a valuable introduction to cadet life, military standards and the expectations of being part of the organisation. The aim was to establish a strong foundation in discipline, personal responsibility and basic military skills.

The training programme included classroom instruction, drill, fieldcraft and an introductory session on the L98A2 (SA80) weapon system. Throughout the weekend, particular emphasis was placed on safety, listening carefully, following instructions and maintaining discipline.

The classroom sessions introduced recruits to the organisation, its values and the standards expected of them. Topics included discipline, turnout, personal responsibility and appropriate behaviour. These sessions helped recruits understand the importance of meeting these standards and making a positive contribution to the contingent.

Drill gave recruits their first practical experience of military discipline and working together as a group. They learnt basic movements, how to form up, adopt the correct positions and respond to commands, while developing their turnout and bearing. Recruits were encouraged to listen carefully and follow instructions promptly and accurately. As the weekend progressed, they began to develop a greater awareness of the standards required and the importance of practising consistently.

The fieldcraft package introduced recruits to the basic principles of operating effectively in an outdoor environment. Training covered personal awareness, movement, concealment and maintaining appropriate discipline in the field. Recruits were encouraged to pay attention to their surroundings, communicate effectively and consider how their actions could affect others. The sessions provided an opportunity to apply their learning in an unfamiliar environment while developing confidence and practical skills.

Recruits also received an introductory lesson on the L98A2 weapon system as part of their initial military familiarisation. Delivered under appropriate supervision, the session focused on safety, discipline and respect for the weapon system. Recruits were introduced to the general characteristics and purpose of the L98A2 and the importance of following authorised training procedures and instructor directions at all times.

The first weekend of the Cadet Recruit Cadre was successful and achieved its primary objectives. Recruits experienced a balanced introduction to cadet training, covering classroom instruction, drill, fieldcraft and weapon-system familiarisation. Despite the inevitable challenges of a first weekend, the recruits showed a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and good potential for further development. They began to understand the standards expected of them and the importance of discipline, personal responsibility and supporting their fellow recruits.

The weekend has provided a strong foundation for the remainder of the cadre. With continued guidance, consistent standards and progressive training, recruits should develop greater confidence, discipline and competence as they gain experience. Overall, it was an encouraging start, and the recruits are to be congratulated on their efforts and commitment during their first weekend. We look forward to seeing them build on this experience as their training continues.
