The U12 A cricket team enjoyed a great day of competition and sunshine at the St Hugh’s 8-a-side Festival on a day defined by high energy, competitive spirit, and valuable learning opportunities for all involved. In the opening fixture, Abingdon set a competitive target of 76 following a display of solid and positive running between the wickets. Despite a valiant effort in the field, Winchester House managed to chase down the total in the final over of the match. The team bounced back strongly in the second game. Electing to bowl first, a committed display from the bowling attack and strong fielding performance restricted Abingdon Prep’s scoring. Striking the ball cleanly, Abingdon then successfully chased down the target set by Abingdon Prep with one over to spare. The final match of the competition took place on a large outfield against the hosts. Batting first St Hugh’s reached a total of 91 in their 10 overs. Abingdon’s response was highlighted by some powerful lower-order hitting and aggressive running, bringing the team close to the target, though they ultimately finished just 10 runs short. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day of cricket where every player had an opportunity to contribute with both bat and ball. The team leaves with lots of lessons learned, and more importantly, plenty of fun had!
