Last week, the boarding community marked the Chinese New Year with vibrant celebrations, welcoming the Year of the Snake. Boarding houses throughout the school were adorned with colourful decorations, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
In School House, visitors were greeted with ornate red lanterns and signs bearing lucky wishes. The House Assembly was delivered by the Fifth Year, who explained the origins of customs associated with Chinese New Year; later the Third Year students participated eagerly in a dragon dance taster session, adding an energetic touch to the festivities. The boarders then enjoyed a delightful Chinese dinner at Parasol’s restaurant in Abingdon, marking it a wonderful occasion to celebrate cultural diversity and community spirit.
This week, Third and Fourth Year students celebrate Chinese New Year through hands-on cultural immersion, combining dragon and lion dances with language skill showcases. Following the dances, students delivered presentations in Mandarin, reflecting on their experiences. One student remarked, “Speaking about it afterward made me proud of what we accomplished together.”
