Our 1st VII ventured down to Bristol on Sunday to take part in the highly competitive Colston's School Sevens. The tournament format was two groups of six teams from all over the country. With six teams per group it meant plenty of rugby for all the schools with five group games plus a final if you topped your group. The conditions to start the day were breezy and bright, however, this changed pretty quickly to heavy rain and strong winds for most of the day. This did not deter our Abingdon boys from playing an attractive offloading style, but the soft mud in places hindered the pacemen in the squad, and certainly made things hard going on the legs throughout the day.

1st VII group results:

27-17 win v King's College, Taunton
21-19 win v Denstone College
15-12 win v Colston's School
38-17 win v Exeter School
36-19 win v Seaford College

This meant our 1st VII topped their group convincingly to set up a grand final against pre tournament favourites Kirkham Grammar School. Kirkham had played their part in a fabulous 15-a-side fixture last October on Waste Court that resulted in Abingdon being on the wrong side of the result, so our boys were looking for revenge.

The final was a true clash of the titans with Kirkham scoring straight from the kick off as well as the final play of the match. Final score 22-5 to Kirkham, which was by no means a fair reflection of how close the match actually was.

A tremendous effort from our boys. Huge work rate and happy faces throughout the day. Thank you to all the parents who came down to support. We look forward to seeing how the boys get on in the coming weeks.
