Abingdon Prep celebrated World Book Day with everyone dressed as their favourite book characters. Headmaster Craig welcomed everyone dressed as Sherlock Holmes, and after form time we all gathered in the hall for an Assembly led by Natasha. She talked about why sharing books and reading is such a wonderful thing, followed by a fiercely fought literary quiz between teams of staff and pupils.

It was wonderful to see the sheer variety of costumes and the imagination that had gone into them. We had James with his Giant Peach and many other Roald Dahl characters, several Dr Seuss Cats and perennial favourites from Harry Potter. We also had a Gangsta Granny, a Beetle Boy, a Stick Man and a Pug from the popular books by Philip Reeve. The judge’s winner was Treebeard the Ent from Lord of the Rings in a wonderful homemade costume. Staff joined in too, with Mary Poppins, Dracula, Hagrid, Cruella de Vil, the Saucepan Man from Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree, amongst them, but it was a very green Grinch who won the staff prize.
