Abingdon Prep hosted their 10th annual Under 13 Rugby Sevens Festival. There were several schools in attendance including; Pitsford, St Hugh’s, Christ Church Cathedral School and Beachborough, as well as our own A and B VII. In line with the RFU regulations the festival was run as a ‘Round Robin’ festival.

Despite being beaten in their first two matches, the Abingdon Prep Bs grew in confidence and showed great character as the competition progressed. An enthralling encounter against CCCS which resulted in a draw was followed by two narrow defeats against Pitsford and St Hugh’s. However, they will have gained a great deal from the experience.

The Abingdon Prep As won their first three matches convincingly, conceding just two tries along the way. Wins against Abingdon Prep ‘B’ (35 – 0), Beachborough (30 – 10) and Pitsford (15 – 0) set them up for their final match against unbeaten St Hugh’s.

The team knew that they had to play to the edges of the pitch to stretch and tire the opposition. Colman ran in two early tries which gave Abingdon Prep a cushion. However, St Hugh’s fought back gamely and scored a try of their own. The second half was extremely exciting with both sides having an equal share of possession. The scores swung to and fro but Abingdon Prep maintained their lead throughout, winning by five tries to four.

Both Abingdon Prep teams showed great character during the afternoon and the boys were a credit to themselves and the school.
