Year 1 and Year 2 went back in time on their visit to the Oxford Castle. The tour was lead by Prison Warder Barker. He took us up a very windy staircase to the top of the tower to look at the views all around Oxford. Then we all crammed into a one man prison cell and heard about a day in the life of a prisoner – the boys decided that it definitely wasn't for them! We read about some of the prisoners. Children were even locked in prisons back in the day! The youngest was a 7 year old girl! The boys tried some of the hard labour that the prisoners would have had to have done. Cranking a handle and pushing on the “stepper” for eight hours a day did not sound like fun to us. The children also found out about Princess Matilda, who was besieged at Oxford Castle in 1142.
