What is Forest School? Ask any of the Pre-prep children and they will say “Forest School is fun!”. The idea behind Forest School has been around for a long time but it wasn’t until the 1950s that a formal philosophy began to develop in Scandinavia. Eventually in 1995, Forest School arrived in the UK, coinciding with national debates on the issues of social disintegration where many sociologists and psychologists suggested that the there was a link between declining amounts of time young people spent experiencing the Natural World and the rise in apparent social disintegration. The term ‘nature deficit disorder’ was coined – read the book by Richard Louv “Last Child in The Woods”.
