8R got all charged up as they studied static electricity – a topic which gives plenty of scope for fun practical work. For instance, they explored transferring charges to balloons via jumpers and hair in a contest to see whose balloon would stay on the ceiling longest. The most excitement and charge was generated by the Van der Graaf generator, which despite the air being a bit damp, managed to stand a lot of hair on end!
