This year's Carol Concert was a very special event as it was also a farewell concert to Chris and Jane Davies. To mark the occasion it was held in the prestigious and historic setting of the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. The boys were very excited and proud to be performing in such a venue and rose to the occasion magnificently in front of a packed auditorium.
The programme began in the traditional way with Once in Royal David's City, soloist Darius Oraee (y.7) before unfolding to reveal the talents of the boys in our main instrumental ensembles, choirs and year group singing, interspersed with instrumental soloists and readings.
There was a good mix of traditional carols with organ accompaniment as well as more modern ones, accompanied by a band of music teachers. Special mention must be made of Jonah Walker (piano, y.7) who played Clementi Sonatina no.3 with sensitivity and lyricism, Gus Miller (saxophone, y.4) whose performance of Lydia was assured and confident, and Magnus Williamson (guitar, y.8) who gave a delightful performance of Walking in the Air.
There were many other highlights, not least the congregational carols, filling the vast space with a full-bodied sound. Senior Choir made a fabulous sound in Rutter's Nativity Carol, Junior Choir's interpretation of Ring out the Bells was rhythmic and enthusiastic, and the year group singing was full of energy. Orchestra gave a polished performance of Jingle Bells, Brass Group played two contrasting pieces, creating a full-bodied and united sound, Jazz Band's cheesey version of God Rest You Merry Gentlemen had the audience clapping along all the way through and Guitar Group gave a superb performance of Sertaneja, a traditional Spanish piece. Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride, skilfully arranged by Tara's husband, Antony for band and chorus made for a grand finale, in which all the staff joined forces with the pupils as a last farewell song to Chris and Jane.
It was lovely to see some past teachers and old boys there, making this whole-school experience a truly memorable occasion for all.
