Coinciding with the Oxfordshire Science Festival, Abingdon Prep joined Christ Church Cathedral School, Chandlings, Moulsford, Pinewood and Thorngrove at the Amey Theatre, Abingdon School, to watch 'Heat, Light and Chemical Reactions' presented by chemistry teachers Mike Litchfield and Richard Fisher. The event started (and finished) with a bang as balloons filled with hydrogen were exploded to set the theme. A range of demonstrations involving colour changes, fire, more explosions and some dramatic experiments involving both very high and very low temperatures were on show. Members of the audience were invited onto the stage to help with the mixing and burning and also wielded mallets with some dramatic destruction of fruit that had been frozen in liquid nitrogen. We found out about what makes a chemical change and saw first hand some effects of changing state.
