September 2024 marks a significant milestone for Tilsley Park as it commemorates ten years since Abingdon School took over the lease of this facility from the Vale of White Horse District Council.
Today, Tilsley Park boasts new and refurbished state-of-the-art facilities, including all-weather pitches, an athletics track and a throws area that rival some of the best in the region. These upgrades have enhanced the physical education experience for students of Abingdon and many other local schools, and firmly remains a facility for community use.
Tilsley Park has become a hub of local activity. Community sports teams, fitness enthusiasts, and families alike have found a welcoming space, with regular hosting of local events ranging from athletics meets and charity runs to the Abingdon Marathon, as well as serving as the home ground for many sporting clubs and organisations, such as Oxford Saints American Football team.
As we celebrate this ten-year anniversary, we reflect on some of the refurbishment projects undertaken at Tilsley Park during this time:
- 2014 – Abingdon School entered a lease agreement with the Vale of White Horse District Council for 125 years
- 2015 – A revamp of some of the internal areas, including our reception and social/meeting rooms
- 2015 – The 3G infield and athletics throws area were built
- 2017- The 7v7 pitches were built
- 2017 – Installation and upgrading the floodlights from halogen
- 2019 – The hockey grandstand was refurbished
- 2019 – The American Football posts were installed
- 2020 – The infield sub-base and drainage was upgraded
- 2022 – All internal lights were upgraded to LED
- 2023 – The installation of upgraded 5v5 pitch fencing with recessed goals
- 2024 – Spectator safety fencing was installed on all hockey pitches
Ten years on, Abingdon School has invested over £2m in building new facilities and improving existing ones at Tilsley Park.
