Article Six of the Tilsley Times, written by Abingdon Athletics Club
Abingdon Athletics Club (AAC) is a friendly and inclusive athletics and running club, originally founded as Abingdon Amblers in 1982 by a group of running friends, but later renamed to better reflect our diverse range of activities.
With over 400 senior and junior members, AAC is the largest multi-disciplinary athletics club in Abingdon, if not in southern Oxfordshire, having grown steadily since its inception. Our young athletes’ section—established in 1995, coinciding with the opening of the Tilsley Park track—has contributed significantly to the Club’s growth.
The Club welcomes runners and athletes of all ages and abilities, from beginners and casual road runners to those training for track and field or competitive events.
We are proud to have Tilsley Park as our home, from where we offer year-round, qualified coached sessions, club runs, and competitions across disciplines such as track and field and road racing.
AAC has always sought to foster strong social ties with the local community, operating with a strict ‘fully inclusive’ mantra. Our talented team of coaches and support staff are qualified to cater to individual needs as they arise. These community ties have extended to parkrun ‘takeovers’ and donations to local charities, particularly arising from our annual celebratory ‘Christmas Pud Run’, held over the beautiful but challenging terrain of Boars Hill.
The Club has recently introduced new club colours, including a significantly modernised vest design, helping to differentiate us from other local running and athletics clubs.
Both the track and field and road running elements of the Club have packed seasonal calendars, from social road runs to competition at the very highest level.
As a Club, we really do strive to offer something for everyone! Visit our website to find out more.
