In a remarkable display of community spirit and athleticism, swimmers aged between 7 and 23 from Abingdon Vale Swimming Club recently took part in a Swimathon at Abingdon School Sports Centre to raise funds for two vital charities: Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. This inspiring event brought together young athletes, showcasing not only their swimming skills but also their commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
Chair, Bashak Tugcetin expressed her pride in the event, stating: “It was amazing to see swimmers of all ages, from 7-year-olds to 23-year-olds, participating. Their enthusiasm and determination truly embody the spirit of our club.” The Swimathon proved to be a resounding success, with the club raising an impressive £1,500. This significant amount will contribute to ongoing research and support services, offering hope and assistance to countless individuals and families affected by cancer.
Adding to the event’s significance, Swim England National Welfare Officer Fiona Blackstone, Swim England National Safeguarding Officer Richard Ball, and Active Oxfordshire Safeguarding and Welfare Manager Heidi Yates attended to show their support for the club and its initiatives. Their presence underscored the importance of safeguarding and welfare in sport, emphasising the need for a safe and nurturing environment for young athletes.
