Abingdonians raise money, and give both
time and money to try and help make a
difference to people and societies all over
the world. The Charity Committee, made
up of boys from all year groups, organise a
range of fundraising activities. This includes
the biennial sponsored walk, which raised
just under £32,000 in 2012. The Committee
also run the School tuck shop, the pro"ts
from which go to charity. Of the money
raised, 70% goes to charities selected
by the Committee and 30% towards
sponsoring fundraising efforts made by
Abingdon boys. Last year the money raised
was distributed both at home and abroad,
for example to Children with Cancer, Age
UK, Water Aid, Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust,
and Aasha, which helps with education and
health care in India.

Summer Camp in Moldova
Abingdon has been raising money to
support Agape, a charity that works
with young people in Moldova, since
2000. Every year a group of sixth-
formers visit the country to help run
a summer camp for disadvantaged
Moldovan children.

When Discretion is the
Better Part of Valour
The Charities Committee supported Nick Rees’s (OA 1994) bid to take part in
the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise money for Breakthrough Cancer
Research. He and teammate Ed Curtis ( image taken in Anglesey last summer)
set off on 4 December to row the Atlantic. With luck they would have arrived by
the beginning of April. However, luck was not on their side and after capsizing
twice in mountainous seas they were forced to radio for help. The 45,000-ton
bulk carrier Sunshine Bliss diverted to rescue them – a terrifying experience just
