11 The importance of bursaries at Abingdon A reflection Bursaries can be transformative. They enable a pupil’s future to be defined by character, talent and potential, rather than financial circumstances. Joshua Mensah’s journey is a powerful example of this impact. From the moment he joined the Lower School, Joshua threw himself into every opportunity, particularly on the sports field. His natural talent in rugby, combined with his humility and determination, saw him rise through the school’s pathway and earn external selection for the Wasps Development Programme. By the time Joshua reached the Sixth Form, he was a key player in the 1st XV and was later awarded Player of the Season, securing an elite rugby scholarship to Brunel University. Mentoring Joshua over his time here, and especially taking him to that pivotal university interview in London, was a privilege. I saw a young man who had grown into himself: calm, articulate, focused and proud. For Joshua, the bursary didn’t just fund a place at school, it unlocked opportunities, broadened his horizons and gave him confidence in his own potential. His story is why bursaries matter.
