This is what the School describes as the “Other Half”, the extra-curricular activities. I was determined to become a doctor and Abingdon enabled that. In addition, by not promoting academia alone, Abingdon helped mould me into a more rounded character through pursuing musical, sporting and social activities. Indeed, upon leaving School and going up to Oxford my Professor advised me that “anyone can get a first by sitting in the library but to succeed in life you need a full CV!” Abingdon placed those foundation stones. I am very impressed by the social commitment that continues to be held by the School through its growing bursary programme as well as the careful investment in building development for educational, sporting and boarding purposes.” Simon Wilden (1982) bingdon’s boarding development project is underway and on track to redevelop and refurbish Austin and Crescent Houses by summer 2023. School House renovations are now scheduled for summer 2024. Sponsor a Room As part of this historic project, Abingdon is offering OAs and the School’s boarding community the chance to sponsor a room in Austin, Crescent or School House. This is a wonderful way to continue connections with boarding at Abingdon, which has been part of the School for more than 650 years. A bingdon’s 110 Club was created in 2021 following the launch of its bursary campaign, Seven years to change a life, to recognise anyone who commits to support a pupil for a period of seven years at a level that provides at least 10% of the cost of a bursary place. This commitment enables the School to plan for new bursary places annually at a time when applications for financial support continue to grow. 110 Club members receive an anonymised annual update on the progress of the pupil they support, which provides an insight into the impact of their gift. They also receive an invitation to an annual reception hosted by the Chair of Governors, a fellow member. Membership is growing and we would be delighted to let you know more about how you can support our bursary campaign. Please do get in touch with the Development Team. A
