This financial help can be up to 100% of the fees. It is not a loan and does not have to be repaid. Abingdon thrives as a school because we have always educated boys from all backgrounds. In the past this was through government schemes such as grammar schools and direct grant places, and now we encourage boys from families who cannot afford the fees by providing financial help to cover some or all of the cost. The financial help we provide is often referred to as a bursary. We currently have nearly 60 families at the school who are receiving help with fees including some who pay no fees at all. Many parents think that an independent or private education is ‘not for their son’ but at Abingdon this is very definitely not the case. Many of our families have no experience of independent schools and worry whether their son will ‘fit in’. We would like to reassure anyone with these doubts that we have had years of experience in helping boys and their families to settle and to make friends. The majority of boys who join us at age 11 come from local primary schools, as did the teacher who is in charge of Years 7 and 8 at Abingdon. He knows exactly how it feels to move from a small school to a much larger senior school. Who is eligible for financial help? Help with fees is available to families with sons in all year groups from age 11. The amount of financial assistance that a family receives is not influenced by a child’s academic ability, although he will need to satisfy the school’s entry requirements. When we take boys into the school, we look at their academic potential as much as their ability as we know that not all children receive the same start in education. We encourage each boy to follow his own interests and, by making the most of what we offer, many of our pupils go on to study at top universities. How much financial help could we receive? The amount of financial help a family receives depends on their own financial circumstances. In some cases it can be up to 100% of fees. Financial help is not available to cover the cost of boarding at Abingdon. We support as many applications as possible but we do have a limited amount of funds available. Confidentiality The application process and the award of financial help is confidential. Many boys at the school are unaware that they receive help with fees – it is up to parents or guardians if they wish to tell them. Further information We encourage any families who are interested in applying for help with fees to contact the school as soon as possible to have a chat; we very much look forward to hearing from you. The contact details are below. What next? If you would like to find out more, including when and how to apply, please: Most applications are reviewed in the autumn term however late applications are possible although funds may have been allocated already.
