14 Members’ News Malcolm Rifkind MP, the Member of Parliament for Kensington and Chairman of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee. David Emerson (2006) married Kathryn Casey in August 2013 in Dorset. Douglas Graham (2006) graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2011 with a degree in Arabic. He went on to start officer training at Sandhurst, commissioning in April 2013 into the Queen’s Royal Hussars. He will deploy to Afghanistan in 2014. James Harrison (2009) read Computer Science at Royal Holloway, University of London. He became involved in student radio and won Gold and Silver at the Student Radio Awards (Best Technical Achievement category) in 2011 and 2012. On the back of his achievements at Insanity Radio and Royal Holloway, James was offered a placement within BBC Research & Development’s Internet Research and Future Services section in London, where he is now employed full-time as a research software engineer working on media analysis and distributed systems. In his spare time James runs events, most recently acting as technical manager for a 1500 capacity music event (BUCKcon) in Manchester Central and The Bridgewater Hall. Steve Hodgetts (2009) , after embarking on a trip around Europe the year he left Abingdon, successfully completed his three years at King’s College London. A swift course change on his arrival at university saw Steve jump from Geography to the Classics department where he gained a 2:1 in Ancient History. After long deliberation, and a glance at the economic climate, Steve decided against pursuing a career in acting - he has now joined an oil and gas consultancy firm in the city (Leader Engineering) until he can afford to catapult himself into the theatre once again. Sam Johnson’s (2006) short film, Jasmine’s Revolution was selected for the 57th BFI London Film Festival. The festival took place at BFI Southbank and in other London venues during the second half of October, presenting over 300 films, documentaries and shorts from around the world. Kenneth Ma (2001) , having graduated from Edinburgh medical school, is currently training to be an obstetrician and gynaecologist. Andrew Maclean (2002) founded his tree surgery business in 2006 after leaving college. The business became incorporated in 2011 as A D Maclean Tree Management Ltd and now employs seven people including Andrew. He feels very privileged to be able to look after Abingdon School’s stock of trees and those at Abingdon Preparatory School, Frilford. The business operates throughout Oxfordshire and the Vale of the White Horse. Andrew lives on the family farm in Frilford, where his business operates from, with his girlfriend of five years. Ben Warner (2000) is now a Specialist Registrar at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, in gastroenterology with a specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease. Ben ran 10k for the charity ‘ForCrohn’s’ in London’s Hyde Park. Robin Wood (2003) has recently become a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is currently working in Norway on Norwegian and International Hydropower and Dam projects. Robin has also spent over a year in Ethiopia on a large, World Bank- funded, irrigation project.
