Welcome to Open Day from the Headmaster
Welcome from Michael Windsor
We are really looking forward to welcoming visitors to Abingdon on Saturday 28 September for our Open Day.
The focus will be on showing the breadth that Abingdon is renowned for and particularly the range of extra-curricular activities that are available alongside a rich and challenging curriculum. We offer over 120 different activities, so there will be plenty for younger visitors to do and they will get a good idea of what life here is all about. From Virtual Reality to assault courses, from science experiments to language quizzes, youngsters are sure to get a lot out of their day.
Our visitors will be shown round by our students, who are wonderful ambassadors for the School and convey the spark of individuality and enthusiasm that makes Abingdon such a busy and happy place.
Visiting parents will be able to talk to our knowledgeable and committed teaching staff to get an insight into our distinctive approach to teaching and learning, and to understand how we put our students’ wellbeing at the centre of school life. They will also see how we prepare our students for moving on after school through a wide-ranging and innovative careers programme.
We will have plenty of information available about our extensive programme of partnerships with local primary and secondary schools. This programme cements our place in the local community and enriches the experience of students both at Abingdon and our partner schools.
The Open Day is a chance, of course, to get a feel for the School’s site and our facilities. A recent addition has been Beech Court, which includes the new Sixth Form Centre, library and our Art department but there are many other places to visit, including our beautiful older buildings such as Big School which celebrates its 150th anniversary next year.
Although Abingdon is a boys’ school, we want our students to get used to working alongside and communicating with girls and so we value our partnership with the School of St Helen and St Katharine, just 5 minutes away, and also holding its Open Day on 28 September.
Many of our students are day boys who travel to school using the extensive joint bus service which we share with St Helen and St Katharine. But if weekly or full boarding is of interest, you’ll have a chance to see our accommodation and get an insight into boarding at Abingdon, which is an integral part of school life.
We understand that fees can be a barrier to applying to a school like Abingdon but we want to make our education available to as many people as possible, and offer means-tested discounts of up to 100% of fees.
Abingdon is an exciting place, founded on ambition, endeavour and adventure. We look forward to meeting you and showing you round.
