School House is located in the
heart of school, as one wing of
the main school building. Home
to over 50 boarders and an-
other 50 dayboys, the house is
a lively community where each
individual has their part to play
in continuing to strengthen the
genuine integration between
those who go home and those
who live here. Many boarders
are fortunate in enjoying special
friendships with dayboys and
look forward to spending time
with them and their families
from time to time.
The house has a remarkable, and
very large, feature common room
which is home to a pool table,
table-tennis and a large-screen
TV with Sky, cinema system and a
PS3.
A new ‘bistro-style’ kitchen,
The K, has been installed over
Easter 2013, thanks to a remark-
ably generous gift from a former
boarder. Food is important to
teenagers, and even more so to
boarders at any time. This bistro
area has substantial seating
around chrome and wood tables
where boys can chat, work, play
games or just eat!
Middle School boys (Years 3-5)
are accommodated in three or
four-bedded rooms and older
boys are fortunate, because of
the structure of the house, to be
in either twin or single rooms.
Boys can expect to change
rooms at least once during the
year and maybe more in the
younger years.
The duties of a prefect
Prefects are senior boys who have
shown that they are capable of
handling responsibility, have good
leadership potential and are able
to set an example for others. They
are there to help you and the other
younger boys during your time at
Abingdon. They also have specific
duties to carry out and each prefect
is responsible for running and
developing a specific aspect of the
life of School House. If you want
to become a prefect you need to
show leadership, enthusiasm, a
willingness to join in the social life
of the house and concern for others,
as well as good organisation and a
hard working attitude towards your
academic studies.
The benefits of being a
prefect
In many ways, being a prefect is
about service to the house and the
boys in the house. However, there
are benefits for those who become
prefects. They get the opportunity
to shape the way the house is
run, to develop leadership and
management skills and to receive
specialist training from the school
counsellor. If you are appointed as
a house prefect it also gives you
something to add to your personal
statement for university and in
future (as long as you do a good
job) it may give you examples that
will be useful for job interviews.
Finally there is a prefects’ social
event that is always great fun.
