Welcome from Mr Swanwick
Welcome to School House. My name is Mr
Swanwick and I am very much looking forward
to meeting you! I am the Housemaster of School
House and it is my job to look after you while you
are at Abingdon School. I live in the boarding house
with my wife, Sue, my daughter, Sadie, our son,
Rex, and our dog, Buster. I will be spending some
time getting to know you when you first arrive and
helping you get to know your new surroundings.
I am very fortunate to have the help of a number
of other teachers, called “tutors”, who look after
smaller groups of pupils within the house. You
will meet them when you arrive and you will be
introduced to your specific tutor.
I know that you will be feeling excited but also
nervous about arriving at Abingdon School and
joining School House. I am here to help you
get to understand the life of the school and the
house. You will have many questions and you
should ask me, or any one of the tutors, for help
whenever you need it.
You may be wondering what School House is!
It is actually a home, a physical building, where
you will live with 51 other boarders while you
are at Abingdon School. However, it is also a
small community within the school. School
House has a mixture of boarders and dayboys.
The house community is there to help each
other through the challenges of school life. We
have teams that compete with other houses
in the school, and social events that bring
different groups together. The other pupils in
the house will quickly become your friends and
will probably be the people who you share your
best moments at Abingdon with. To find out
more you should read through this handbook
carefully.
I look forward to meeting you in person in
September.
Mr Edward Swanwick
Hi Lads! Welcome to Abingdon, and to School
House! We understand how daunting the
prospect of boarding may be, but rest assured,
you are coming into a community that will be
dedicated to making sure you feel at home. Our
team of School House Prefects will be available
at all times to ensure that your transition into
Abingdon is as easy as possible, and we, along
with Mr. Swanwick and his team of tutors, will
always be available to answer any questions
that you may have!
To Board at Abingdon is to be a part of a tight-knit
community of individuals, who exhibit fantastic
diversity; with students from the UK, Russia,
Hong Kong, Singapore, Nigeria and many other
countries!
We whole-heartedly encourage you all to
take the opportunities presented to you at
Abingdon, both those specifically for the
boarding community, and those for everyone.
You are encouraged to pursue and broaden your
interests, be it music, drama, sport or something
else entirely! The number of activities available at
Abingdon continues to amaze me; ranging from
Rugby to Debating, from Fencing to Croquet,
there genuinely is something for everyone.
We all hope that, in time, you come to regard
School House as your home away from home,
and that you come to think of us as your second
family.
