The duties of a prefect
Prefects are senior boys who have shown that they
are capable of handling responsibility, have good
leadership potential and are able to set and example
for others. They are there to help you and the other
younger boys during your time at Abingdon. They also
have specific duties to carry out and each prefect is
responsible for running and developing a specific
aspect of the life of the Davies House. If you want
to become a prefect you need to show leadership,
enthusiasm, a willingness to join in the social life of
the house and concern for others, as well as good
organisation and a hard working attitude towards
your academic studies.
The benefits of being a prefect
In many ways, being a prefect is about service to the
house and the boys in the house. However, there are
benefits for those who become prefects. They get
the opportunity to shape the way the house is run,
to develop leadership and management skills and to
receive specialist training from the school counsellor.
If you are appointed as a house prefect it also gives
you something to add to your personal statement for
university and in future (as long as you do a good
job) it may give you examples that will be useful for
job interviews. Finally there is a prefects’ social event
that is always great fun.
