Abingdonian 2017

86 The Abingdonian Crescent House It has been another great year for the boys of Crescent House, and when I look back on all that has happened I am, as ever, amazed by how much time, energy and enthusiasm the boys in the House throw into all their endeavours. There are always too many to give a fully comprehensive list, but I have included below many of the highlights of the year. Crescent House boys achieved a great deal of success on the sports field throughout the year, and it was great to see so many fantastic team and individual performances in the inter-house sports. In the Michaelmas Term, Crescent dominated the racquet sports, with Perry Tsai winning the U15 badminton singles, and Cameron Yu and Brian Ho winning the U15 doubles; Sam Christie won the U16 squash; and Felipe Jin Li and Jate Jaturanpinyo won the U18 doubles table tennis - their third victory in three years. Crescent also won the U18 swimming event, with a team consisting of Giles Stratton, James Heron, Daniel Petrov, Jonathan Lee, Hysan Woo, Henry Barlow and Kai Miles. In the Lent Term, Freddie Cunningham, Kipp Mainstone, Rory Mitchell and Hugo Wade came first in the third year section of the Road Relay, while Andrew Jin and Leo Wu won the U14 badminton doubles. Rory and Kipp, along with Nathan Hudson, Louis Heard, Harry Capon, Dominic Swain and Oliver Botting won the U15 hockey tournament. The third and fourth years continued their sporting success in the Summer Term, with an U15 team featuring Nathan Hudson, James Calver, Owen Ravden, Rory Mitchell, Kipp Mainstone, Shi Hong Kuang and Fred Tseung winning the inter-house cricket. In the inter-house athletics, Freddie Cunningham won the 800m, Rory Mitchell the 1500m, Hugo Wade the 400m and Naum Berezovskiy the shot in the U14 category with Nathan Hudson winning the U15 400m. Many Crescent boys achieved great things for school teams throughout the year, but Liam Hilditch’s unbeaten century for the U14 A cricket team against Reading School, Scott Yap’s swimming, in particular his achievements at the ESSA Relays and Warwick 100s, and Jerry Yang’s contributions to the school chess team, were amongst the most notable. While writing these articles, I am always struck by the range and diversity of achievements that boys in the house manage. Standouts for me include: Peter Wang being part of the winning team ‘Interport 20’ in the Airport to Airport Challenge, a science and engineering competition to devise a fast transportation network connecting all the London airports; Kenneth Au Yeung, for his outstanding violin concerto soloist in Vivaldi’s Winter at the Spring Concert, and his beautiful playing of Massanet’s Meditation on Remembrance Day earlier in the year; Jai Sidpra, for his quick thinking in coming to the aid of a teammate who had fallen into a bog while on a Gold D of E expedition on Dartmoor; Callum Ravden and Benjamin Adams, for their powerful and convincing performances in the production of London Road ; and Jamie Farrow for his excellent tenor solo with the Chapel Choir at Tewkesbury. Jamie also directed Crescent’s house song for 2016, his third and final year of doing so, which was a rousing and
