Abingdonian 2017
59 www.abingdon.org.uk Summer Term won the plate competition with ease (6-1 in the final!). Eton Pairs Tournament Our U15 IV of Ethan McLellan, Jimmy Strainge, Felix Breach and Will Taylor finished 6th out of 16 ahead of Wellington, Charterhouse, Hampton, Tonbridge, New Hall and Sevenoaks, amongst others. A good result in a tough competition. St George’s Pairs Our U19 IV of Sam Christie, Ethan McLellan, William Pearson and Lafite Lo came 7th out of 16 schools, beating Radley’s first pair 6-0 in the process! The opposition was tough e.g. Eton, Reed’s and New Hall. Not a bad result at all given we had lost one of our top players to work experience. Inter Schools Matches Seniors The seniors enjoyed many convincing wins over MCS, Winchester, Oratory, St Edward’s, and finally Warwick. Many thanks to the departing Upper Sixth tennis players for their contribution to the Tennis Club over many years and in particular: Tom Buckle, George Jeffreys and George Strainge. U16s It was a very short season due to examinations, with victory over MCS, Stowe and a draw with Winchester. However, many boys continued playing and representing higher, more senior, teams. This commitment shows excellent time management and dedication to Abingdon tennis. Particular thanks to Sam Christie, Max Hall, Aron Lavis, Louis Brosnan and Angus Blomfield. U15s There were wins against Winchester and Warwick, and many draws! The boys came runners up in the OXIST and in the U15 MCS Tennis Festival Jimmy Strainge came 6th/12 and Ethan McLellan 7th/12, competing against U15 boys from KES Birmingham, MCS, Perse, Rugby and Warwick. U14s They were a particularly talented year group, with victories over Radley, Warwick, MCS and overall winners of the OXIST. Two boys were selected to play for the year above (and beyond that) on a number occasions: Felix Breach and Will Taylor. U13s and U12s There is a lot of interest in this age group, which bodes well for the future. There was a good result against Moulsford. Seb Muller and Max Struthers did well at ISTA reaching the Semi-finals of the John Barrett Shield (U13 boys). Ben Ponniah
