Abingdonian 2017

37 www.abingdon.org.uk Lent Term all felt we had experienced a lot, and that it was unlike any shoot we had been on before. Each day brought encounters with new and inspiring people. One of the great surprises for me of being in a place where so many people were approaching the last days of life was how much laughter there was. Indeed, this was one of the main things we wanted to portray: the sense of humour that characterises Sobell. It really was an inspiring and eye-opening experience, and we hope our film did Sobell House justice. It was a privilege to be able to premiere the film before an audience of staff and patients at the hospice in March 2017, for which we were joined by the Headmaster, AFU tutor Duncan Pickstock and Mr Taylor. It was encouraging to see the film immediately generating useful publicity: the Oxford Mail wrote a piece about the making of the film before Charles and I were interviewed about it on BBC Radio Oxford. All three of us were invited to film an interview with OA and Radiohead drummer Phil Selway who visited the school to offer his own endorsement of the work of Sobell and our film.
