Di Bloomfield
Di Bloomfield, who has been a familiar
face about the School for thirty-four years,
retired at the end of last term. She first
started work at Abingdon in 1977, after
ten years as a cleaner she was appointed
assistant housekeeper, and twelve years
later head housekeeper. When asked
recently what the job has entailed she
laughed and said anything and everything,
whatever she’s been asked to do.
Things have changed and the School has
grown in both numbers and buildings,
thirty-four years ago there were six
cleaners on the staff, now there are more
than forty, including those in the boarding
houses. However, Di says that it has
always been a happy place to work,
helped by having a great team.
Born and brought up in Abingdon, working
at the School has been something of a
family affair – both Di’s mother-in-law and
father-in-law worked here, as do two of
her brothers.
The mother of two and grandmother of six,
Di does not envisage a quiet retirement but
she’s looking forward to being free to do
whatever she wants to do.

approached their results, Abingdon boys
had nothing to fear: 65% of all A levels
were at grades A* and A, and 20 boys
achieved 3 A*s or more. At GCSE, 81%
of all results were at grades A* and A, two
boys achieved 12 A*s each and 17 boys

expressed her pride in their performances
and offered her congratulations to the
