Gold Crest Awards Gold CREST Awards from the British Science Association were presented to five students and to OA Colm Lambert in recognition of their project to develop the Primary Science Club into the lasting success that it has become. Congratulations to Freddie Nicholson, Alfie Marshall, Oliver Lee, Alvin Tam and Dennis Wei. www.abingdon.org.uk 5 The Literary Society welcomed back OA and Senior Lecturer in American Literature at Oxford Brookes, Dr Niall Munro, who gave a lecture on the two A Level set texts: The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath . It was a fascinating talk and a great pleasure to welcome some of the English students from St Helen’s, too. Abingdon News At the end of last term lower school boys wrote Christmas cards to send a festive message to children in Moldova. Agape, Abingdon’s partner charity in Moldova, delivered these cards to schools in Ialoveni and Zimbreni. This term we received replies which the boys thoroughly enjoyed reading. Season’s Greetings from Moldova! Success at Mandarin Speaking Competition Fourth year pupil Matthew Rolfe represented Abingdon at the final round of the British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition. 88 schools and hundreds of pupils took part in the regional heats. Matthew gave a presentation, answered questions and undertook simultaneous translation. Primary Schools’ Festival of Languages Nearly 100 primary school pupils took part in the Languages’ Festival, learning sign language and using their linguistic skills to decipher a made-up language. They also enjoyed Spanish, French, German, Mandarin and Russian workshops. Exploring American Literature
