8 September 2018 Abingdon Prep In School Careers Focus Michael Triff from the Senior School introduced ‘Career Thinking’ to our Year 8 boys. A week later, with thoughts honed towards thinking of their interests and favourite subjects, they were ready for the next step when our third Careers event got into full swing. A selection of parents made short pitches to the boys about working in: Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Architecture, Property Development, Scientific Research, Journalism, Auctioneering and Public Relations, Marketing and Finance. The boys then had an opportunitiy to ask questions and explore a range of resources. We all had our eyes opened to the world of work and the path it may take to arrive at our destination. A huge thank you to all the parents who participated. Linda Gaskell Public Relations Law Architecture Science Research Dentistry Verse Speaking Competition We were delighted to welcome back Jon Gabitass to judge the competition and offer words of advice on the art of public speaking. The standard was exceptionally high this year, making it difficult to choose overall winners. However, Nirmat’s engaging recital of ‘The Night Before the Match’ by John Foster earned him the Junior School trophy, while George’s outstanding performance of ‘St Crispin’s Day Speech’ from Henry V, impressed the judges so much that he was awarded the Middle School trophy. Congratulations to all our deserving finalists: Leon, Michael, Nirmat, Dylan, George, Jack, William and Tommy and a special thank you to Jon Gabitass for inspiring the boys and helping to make the afternoon a memorable occasion.
