6 September 2019 Abingdon Prep Out & About Once again, Year 5 enjoyed an informative trip to HMS Victory at the Royal Dockyard in Portsmouth as part of their history unit on Nelson and his navy. As well as a tour around the always impressive flagship of the fleet, which was victorious at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, the boys took part in workshops which allowed them to handle artefacts connected to the period, and activities which helped to expand their knowledge and understanding of life at sea during that era. This year we were privileged to witness some of the preparations for the commemoration of 75 years since D-Day, including the visit of a certain leader from across the Atlantic. The boys were well behaved on the trip, and put their experience to use later during classroom sessions writing ‘authentic’ letters home, and making presentations about the ship’s decks. Year 5 at HMS Victory In May, 8R visited Richmond Retirement Village in Witney. They enjoyed serving afternoon tea, engaging in conversation with residents, and providing some musical entertainment. The Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools (IMPS) gives Year 6 children basic first aid skills. Our boys went to the John Radcliffe Hospital for their session. Below is Arjun’s account of their visit in May. Year 6 IMPS at the JR “After a long coach trip stuck in traffic (due to Prince Harry’s visit!), we reached the hospital training building. There we learnt what to do if someone collapsed and how to do CPR on test dummies. In another room, we learned what to do in some other serious First Aid incidents such as having an electric shock. Then, we had an awesome finger cast put on as a token of our visit and were given a couple of little cards that told us what to do if we found ourselves in a First Aid incident if we forgot. We all learned something from our trip.” 8R Entertain
