Ten third year boys were able to visit a TEENTECH event held at Gloucester County Cricket Club’s Bristol Pavilion. During the day they were able to carry out interactive activities led by engineers and scientists from large companies and academic institutions such as Bristol University.
They worked in small teams to develop their own ideas for future technological devices, including health monitoring spectacles and a phone that locks if the user does too little exercise. Amongst the companies running activities were Lloyds Bank, showing how they are using robotics and coding to improve customer experience, as well as Costain and Hitachi railway engineering divisions and the South West Regional Cyber Crime Unit.
During the afternoon the Abingdon boys took part in a drone flying challenge run by the Bio-Aeronautics group at Bristol University and systems engineering challenges run by apprentices and graduate engineers from Airbus. The day ended with the award of certificates in a number of categories by TEENTECH’s CEO and ex-BBC presenter, Maggie Philbin, including an award for best new tech idea for Abingdon’s health monitoring glasses.
