Today brought about the much-anticipated OA vs current 1st XV rugby match. With the sun out, a good crowd had gathered to watch what promised to be a hard, yet fun, spectacle. After good preparations from the OAs, which included music and a touch of face paint, the game started at a ferocious intensity. The OAs were the first to strike with a nice move, which led to Pete Moore carrying the ball over the line. This seemed to kick the 1st XV into action who started to play some nice attacking rugby, only to be halted by good defence from the OAs. With the match in full flow the OAs started to show their physical dominance, which led to two quick tries. Most of the crowd thought that was game set and match, however the 1st XV quickly gathered together and showed some great resilience and with a ‘never say die attitude’ started to produce some fantastic flowing moves. With tries from both sides in the first half all was to play for. The 2nd half began, the 1st XV scored first with a break away try, drawing the score near on level. With the match continuing to gather momentum, the OA side pushed hard leading to more tries being scored. The final whistle blew and the score ended up 34-23 to the OA side. A special mention must go to Pete Moore who organised the OA team, and also to Olly Deasy, Raj Ghosh and Alex Cann for organising and helping out during the event.

We look forward to next year’s fixture, which is set to take place on Saturday 6 September 2014. For the first time, the season will be officially kicked off with our OA match which will be supported by all members of the Rugby Club. Touchliners and parents will be most welcome and it is intended to have a start of season barbeque to celebrate the beginning of the Michaelmas Term and Abingdon rugby.
