We were delighted to welcome over 50 OAs to the National Liberal Club on Wednesday 2 October for our OA Career Networking. Representatives from law, investment, financial, environmental, technology and public sectors built connections and shared experiences.

A huge thank you to the six OAs who spoke of their career sectors and encouraged peer to peer career discussion.

Benjamin Gancz (1999), CEO – Qumodo
Robert Sparkes (1987), Technology Director, Know the Way Ltd.
Mike Morris (1996), CEO, Severn Rivers Trust
Julian Denee (1991), Head of Strategy, Gazprom Marketing and Trading
Alex Sharp (2008), Senior Tax Manager, Greystar Paul Batchelor (2000), Partner, Shoosmiths LLP

Several recurring themes emerged:
– Write down your professional ambitions and keep them close
– Maintain your wellbeing – don’t let work pressure build up
– Connections and contacts outside of your own sector are invaluable
– Embrace the phases of steep learning that may involve longer hours – they won’t last forever but do take you forward professionally.
– Soft skills will always be in demand – managing and leading teams effectively and communicating a concept to a non-technical audience are valuable assets.

We hope all OAs who attended took away actions to follow up on, no matter at what stage of their career. Feedback is very welcome so please let us know your thoughts. If you would like to see other sectors included at a future OA careers event, let us know.
