The John Rayson Award is a memorial to the late John Rayson (1924-2012), who was an Old Abingdonian (1942) and gave a lifetime of service to Abingdon School. He was President of the Old Abingdonian Club and served on the OA Committee for several decades. He was also a School Governor and Chairman of TASS (The Abingdon School Society), the fore-runner of ASPA (Abingdon School Parents’ Association). His two sons also went to Abingdon School, Adrian (OA 1973) and Will (OA 1980).
John Rayson served in the RAF, was seconded to the Army Airborne Division and piloted a troop-carrying glider in Operation Varsity, the successful airborne crossing of the Rhine in March 1945. He then went on to a long career as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor at Henry Cooper and Sons, the country’s oldest QS firm, eventually becoming Senior Partner. He enjoyed classical music, playing the piano and organ, and was an energetic and enthusiastic world traveller throughout his life.
