The Amey Theatre
The Amey Theatre, built in the 1980s, sits at the heart of Abingdon School’s Arts Centre.
The theatre is equipped with modern stage lighting and sound facilities and now boasts an 8m x 5m cinema standard screen and projector for film screenings.
Supporting the main auditorium is a range of spaces including a conservatory style foyer, box office and the usual audience facilities.
The Amey Theatre acts as a focus for much cultural activity in the area and is a popular venue for local organisational events.
The Amey Theatre Foyer is a conservatory style area constructed directly onto the side of the theatre. It is ideal as either an informal breakout space with a series of café style seating and tables or can be set up for a more formal end on talk.
It’s the perfect bright and open space to welcome guests before a performance or screening the theatre.

There are currently 2 Drama Studios located in the Arts Centre.
Drama Studio 1 was created in 2018 and is located on the 1st Floor of the Arts Centre. It is the smaller of the 2 studios, but is equipped with modern sound and lighting facilities and makes an excellent black box performance or rehearsal space. It is supported by a large adjacent classroom which is ideal as a Foyer, Green Room or breakout space. The classroom also comes equipped with AV facilities
Drama Studio 2 is located on the 2nd Floor of the Arts Centre. The larger of the 2 spaces, it has a capacity of up to 40 on raked seating and is equipped with modern lighting, sound and audio visual facilities. It is supported by a small classroom space which could be used either as a Green Room or small Foyer space.
The Studios are primarily used for Drama and Theatre Studies teaching to students and also play host to examination and several small productions throughout the year.
The Ingham Room is situated on the ground floor of the Arts Centre, completed in 2003 and is adjacent to the Amey Theatre. It has a capacity of up to 60 people for a theatre style set-up and can be equipped with AV facilities depending upon the event.
The Ingham Room is also ideal for use as a Green Room/dressing room for the Amey Theatre due to its close proximity to the stage. It is also equipped with an audio and video relay to the Amey Theatre.
In the 12th century the Benedictine monks of Abingdon Abbey founded the School – we claim St Edmund as one of our first boys – and built St Nicolas’ Church, where the School worshipped. In the 16th century the Church became part of the new Church of England. The School continues that parish church link with three annual services in St Helen’s and St Michael’s Churches.
Charles Maude Room
The Charles Maude Room, or CMR for short, is located on the east end of Big School and is situated directly underneath the chapel. It has recently been refurbished over the summer of 2015 and has had a varied use since the school moved to this site, ranging from the school gymnasium, a sixth form common room to its current use as a Drama teaching space and a function room. The CMR has a simple but fully comprehensive sound system and, upon request, it is also possible to install theatre lighting for your event. Please note, access to the CMR is down a series of steps.
