Abingdon Swim School returns from November

We are pleased to announce that we have been given the green light to start our swim school lessons again. As we are sure you can understand we will be starting lessons off with some procedural and operational changes. These changes consist of:

  • Lessons will only start for stage 4+ and for children age 8 years and above. The reason for this is because Abingdon School would like to limit the amount of people on site, and in accordance to our Sports Centre procedures that state ‘children 8 years + can be in the building without a parent’. Lower stages and ages will be introduced at a later date.
  • We are looking to only run lessons on Saturdays to begin with and these lessons will be between 1030 -1300. Therefore, children who previously had lessons on Sundays will be offered lessons on Saturday until Christmas.
  • Term Dates: Saturday 7 November – Saturday 19 December 2020 (7 lessons) between 1030-1300.
  • Lessons will continue to be 30-minutes long, but there will be a period of 15-minutes between lessons to allow for cleaning and preparing for the next lesson.
  • There will be changes to the process of how children should enter and leave the site. For instance, a one-way system through the building and instructions on how to access the poolside. These changes will be outlined to all parents.
  • Please be aware, parents are not allowed on campus, and MUST stay in the car park. We will have designated drop off and pick up areas clearly sign-posted in the car park.

Please contact our Swim School Coordinator if you have any queries: Email: swimschool@abingdon.org.uk.

Safety procedures for swimming lessons

We look forward to welcoming your child back to Abingdon Swim School and we hope that parents/guardians feel confident and reassured that we have robust safety procedures in place to keep your child safe.

Please note, this is a phased return to swimming lessons with restricted numbers and we would appreciate your cooperation in following these new procedures.

  • Safety first
The safety of our customers and staff is our top priority and we are strictly follow the latest government and Swim England guidance, along with Abingdon School policies.
  • Risk Assessment
We have updated our Swim School Risk Assessment to incorporate the recommendations for Covid-19. One of the ways we have reduced the risk is to restrict the minimum age to 8-years old in the first phase, as this will enable children to be on site independently. As a result, we regret that parents are not permitted to access the Abingdon School site at this time, as this is a school policy and must be strictly followed. If you wish to contact the Sports Centre on arrival, please call 01235 849 062 or speak to the member of staff located at Faringdon Lodge.
  • New Faringdon Lodge
The Faringdon Lodge project is now complete and therefore you will notice a slightly different layout and entrance to the Sports Centre. A member of staff will be on duty to provide assistance when you arrive.
  • Drop off and go
As school activities will be taking place on Saturday mornings, there will be an increased number of cars dropping children off on site. Therefore, we would appreciate it if swim school parents could ‘drop off and go’ to avoid congestion.
  • QR Code – Health questionnaire
The parent/guardian of every child must complete a QR code health questionnaire which will be located at the car park drop off point next to the new Faringdon Lodge reception. This will confirm that your child is not displaying any signs of Covid-19 before they enter the school site. There will be a number of QR code stations to avoid congestion. If you are entering the Sports Centre via Royce’s Alley, there will be a QR code health questionnaire at the entrance gate. Parents/guardians should not proceed beyond this point. Please note that no child will be allowed on site without completing a satisfactory health questionnaire.
  • NHS Track and Trace
We are working hard to keep everyone safe. Now that the NHS Track and Trace app is available, we would be grateful if you download it and scan the QR code when you visit us. This will record the day and time of your visit and also tell you if you’ve come into contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.
  • Arriving for swim lessons
We recommend arriving 15-minutes prior to your swim lesson in order to leave sufficient time to complete the QR code and to ensure your child is ready for their lesson.
  • Hand sanitising
Hand sanitiser stations are located throughout the Sports Centre and all children must use the hand sanitiser before entering the building.
  • Social distancing
Social distancing will be in place when the children are in the building.
  • PPE
Sports Centre staff will wear face masks (except when lifeguarding) and will carry Personal Protective Equipment for First Aid, should there be a requirement.
  • Teaching safely
Swim England guidance recommends teaching from the poolside, which all swim teachers will do. All swim teachers will wear face masks or visors throughout the lesson.
  • Use of teaching equipment
Any teaching aids will be cleaned before the next person uses it. Kick boards and fins will be provided however, if you wish to bring your own please do.
  • Use of changing rooms
We ask that children come along to their swimming lesson ‘swim ready’ (wearing their swimming costumes under their outdoor clothes) so that they do not need to use the changing rooms on arrival. All children will be allocated a safe place to leave their clothes and belongings. Children can use the changing rooms after swimming and we will allocate a maximum number per changing room to ensure that they can be socially distanced. Please note that children should wear face masks in the changing rooms.
  • Flow of traffic
There will be separate entrance and exit locations for children. On entering the building, children will be directed onto the poolside and advised where to go and what to do. After their lesson, they will be directed where to get changed and which way to exit the building.
  • Additional cleaning
Additional cleaning will be in place to ensure that changing rooms and touch points are cleaned regularly and to ensure that all equipment is cleaned after use.
  • Procedures may be updated
The situation is dynamic and the guidance we are able to give to our customers is often dependent on the information we receive from the government. We will update this page and notify customers when further details become available.
  • If you have any questions
Please contact Ben Sanders, our Swim School Coordinator if you have any queries. You can email swimschool@abingdon.org.uk or call 01235 849 062.
