8 January 2019

Tuesday 8 January did not just mark the start of the new term but also a successful and enjoyable visit from colleagues from Shanghai High School, including their Principal, Mr Feng.

Shanghai High, which includes a local and international division, is considered to be one of the very top schools in the Shanghai district, which regularly tops international league tables for educational outcomes. Entry to the local division is fiercely competitive, with over 10,000 students sitting for places, and only the top 3% of those being considered for entry.

Pupils from the school are regularly members of the Chinese team for the International Maths Olympiad which has won the competition for the past 11 years! Sixth form maths students who have taken the qualification papers for the Maths Olympiad will recognise the scale of this achievement…

The purpose of the visit was to sign an agreement that paves the way for future collaboration and cooperation, including exchanges of pupils and teachers. It was fascinating to learn about Shanghai High’s approaches to teaching and learning and the wider aspects of school life, and we are sure that our collaboration will be fruitful for pupils and teachers from both schools.

Our visitors also met their counterparts on the Abingdon staff and enjoyed a tour of the School, led by a lower sixth student, on a beautifully crisp January day.
